A recent infographic released by 2.0 Adoption Council indicates that the average salary for director level of social media is approximately $114,000 per year. The study, based on information gathered from 96 participants, also revealed that those in marketing earn an average salary of $105,000 per year.

Online spending is up in 2011, meaning there are a growing number of brands willing to invest money on social media campaigns. which have repeatedly proven powerful in bringing a higher return on the investment than traditional methods of advertising. For example, the need to hire a social media expert with knowledge of SEO is growing – the demand is high, but the number of qualified experts is significantly lower. And in this post panda world, content marketing must be approached with intricate attention to detail.

The truth of the matter is that social media is still widely misunderstood despite being used daily across the globe for many purposes. Search engine optimization plays a dominating role in successful social media campaigns, but many large brands are still inexperienced when it comes to online marketing. The dynamic growth of the web combined with opportunities to reach a large audience are driving the need to bring in outside gurus who can respectively focus on the technical aspects.

Salaries in social media continue to grow even at a time when the job market is still very much in turmoil – a strong indication that SEO and marketing gurus won’t be seeking tickets for the unemployment lines anytime soon. Large companies can’t afford to skimp on social media and marketing efforts, and the benefits of a successful campaign far outweigh the costs associated to hire an expert in SEO and social media.

85% of U.S. Marketing Executives feel that customer engagement is the primary benefit of social media marketing. And in 2011, a growing number of small businesses and individual proprietors rely solely on social media to market and distribute products and services across the globe, leaving no room for poor engagement.

Another reason social media salaries are growing is due in part to how time consuming online marketing campaigns can be. The web is a constant source of new information and media, making it vital to stay current with trends. Spreading these efforts out among current employees just isn’t logical when compared to the likely already heavy workload, and a $200k investment in an expert is hardly missed when the return on a successful campaign is far greater. By all visible accounts, social media is a booming industry that won’t be fading within the near future.

Social Media Spending – Why Salaries Are Rising

The United States spent $1.7 billion in 2010 on social media marketing. Global spending came to $3.4 billion.
Facebook spending continues to rise where other marketing campaign costs are leveling off. $1.76 billion will be invested in Facebook marketing efforts in 2011, an alarming 165% increase from campaigns in 2009.
Facebook, Twitter and Tumblr may be dominating the web, but investors still placed $323 million in MySpace advertising during 2010.
40% of SEO campaigns achieve returns in excess of 500%.
42% of internet users click on the top ranked search result, a position top SEO experts are dedicated and qualified to achieve.
22%of PPC campaigns achieve returns in excess of 500%.
