'Excessed' DCPS Teachers Compete For Jobs At Job Fair

May 12, 2011 - Just a few days ago, nearly 750 D.C. Public Schools teachers and staff were told they would no longer have their positions at the end of the academic year. Many of them took to a job fair organized by DCPS this week to see what else is out there.

DCPS teachers and staff members looking for new positions after being 'excessed' were asked to bring their most recent evaluations to a job fair May 11.

The employees that received the notices that their jobs were being "excessed," as it is called, will be able to reapply for other openings in the school system.

At Wednesday's "transfer fair," as it was called, more than 300 employees crowded into a large school auditorium, where principals from more than 60 schools were on hand collecting resumes and conducting mini-interviews.

Teachers were also asked to bring along their evaluation forms from last year. Brittany Cox, one employee browsing positions a the fair, says the last three weeks at school have been stressful with everyone wondering whose job would be cut.

"Knowing that you had to essentially compete against your colleagues to maintain your position, that was awkward," she says.

Gregory Lewis, a music teacher, says he was disappointed that of the nine schools listed as looking for a vocal music teacher, only one principal was interested in hiring.

"Or the schools that were there stated that their names should not be on the list," he says.

Principals are expected to make their hiring decisions by July 1.
