Best Companies For New Grads: Who’s Hiring And Who’s Paying

by Meghan Casserly - 06/14/2011

"This morning entry-level job site CollegeGrad.com released its annual Top Entry-Level Employers list of employers forecasting to hire "

This morning entry-level job site CollegeGrad.com released its annual Top Entry-Level Employers list of employers forecasting to hire from this year’s pool of college graduates. The top five employers of entry-level college graduates include Teach for America, Hertz and Verizon Wireless among others who show more than 4,000 potential entry level hires in 2011.

Companies were surveyed based on the number of hires they anticipate will fill entry-level positions. CollegeGrad says the data was collected between March and May of 2011 and is based on responses from the 931 companies that participated voluntarily in the survey.

According to a company spokesperson, Sara Robbins of QuinStreet, the survey was open to all companies of all sizes, which accounts for the wide range in number of anticipated hires. The top twenty companies released in survey findings range from 500 (accounting firm McGladrey) to 8,500 (rental car company Enterprise).

The top five companies looking to recruit entry level employees in 2011, with salary estimated from job site GlassDoor.com are:

No. 1 Enterprise Rent-A-Car; hiring forecast: 8,500.

Average salary for management trainee, $31,635; for management assistant, $32,351; assistant store manager, $36,405; manager assistant, $31,965; staff accountant, $38,812.

No. 2 Teach For America; hiring forecast 4,925.

Average salary for teachers, $42,451; average salary for marketing associate, $42,792.

No. 3 Verizon Wireless; hiring forecast 4,250.

Average salary for software engineer, $87,712; retail sales rep, $31,568; customer service rep, $30,536; engineer systems, $80,680; business account exec, $48,717; account exec, $42,731; analyst, $50,681.

No. 4 Hertz Automotive Rental; hiring forecast 4,000.

Average salary for accountant, $42,158; management trainee, $26,673; programmer analyst, $61,275; business analyst, $48,000; internal auditor, $40,026.

No. 5 PricewaterhouseCoopers; hiring forecast 3,938.

Average salary for tax associate, $59,807; audit associate, $54,004; accountant, $51,000; business analyst, $69,040; staff accountant, $49,750; transaction services associate, $59,000.

The survey brings good news: 2011 is seeing an increase in hiring for the first time in two years. The number of entry-level hires increased 22 percent from 2010.

This number closely aligns with the recent announcement of a 19% increase in hiring of new college grads by the National Association of Colleges and Employers (NACE) noted recently by my colleague Jenna Goudreau in a post looking at the best entry level jobs in the country. Both increases forecast a much brighter job outlook for recent college graduates, who according to CollegeGrad.com faced an 11 percent hiring decrease between 2009 and 2010.

In addition to the hiring forecast, all firms were asked about their hiring process: what they look for, how they recruit and what college majors score the highest earning positions. Not surprisingly, college major, interviewing skills, and experience ranked as the three most heavily considered characteristics in a candidate. But in an interesting and timely twist, the survey showed that college campus career fairs are still the most popular recruiting method for employers, possibly debunking the notion that social media is replacing traditional recruiting methods.

In conjunction with CollegeGrad.com, Schools.com mined the survey for the most promising (or hire-worthy) college majors this year.
