The job market for summer students is a tough one to crack this year.
"It's very competitive but persistence will pay off," says Anne Marie Cosford, manager of government and access programs at Lambton College.
Approximately 100 students a week have been using the province's summer jobs service since it opened at the college May 2.
They are looking for both paid and volunteer positions, Cosford said.
"That's a lot of traffic. It's surprising because I thought we'd have to do a fair bit of damage control when the federal and provincial programs parted."
In previous years, the federal and provincial summer student job programs combined forces and located one centre at the downtown Bayside Mall.
But the federal student program is at the Service Canada office on Exmouth Street this year and the provincial one was moved to the college.
Cosford said a fair bit of marketing has occurred to let students know about the new location and it appears to be working.
At any given time, 20 to 50 jobs are on the centre's job board and at least a dozen or more listings are posted on the website at www.lambton.on.ca/sjs.
Two student employment consultants are hired to assist job seekers onsite and "mine" for potential jobs.
While Cosford said she is impressed by the numbers so far, she can't make any kind of comparison to other years because of the new configuration of services.
Employment Ontario is providing wage subsidies for as much as $2 per hour for numerous summer employers who have applied and qualified.
There's still many good summer positions available, Cosford said.
"We've got everything from food service to technical jobs, landscaping, office administration and day camp counsellors."
The centre at Lambton College is located at the main campus in classroom B106. It serves students ages 15 to 30 years and is open 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. Monday through Friday and until 7 p.m. on Wednesdays.
Job search workshops and workplace training are held free-of-charge. For details, call 519-542-7751 ext. 3066 or ext. 3064.
