As Oregon unemployment falls, tech jobs resume their climb

"Oregon's unemployment rate was in the single digits last month, according to data out this morning from the state employment department. And Oregon's high-tech employers added jobs again, as they have in four of the past six months.

Oregon's unemployment rate was in the single digits last month, according to data out this morning from the state employment department. And Oregon's high-tech employers added jobs again, as they have in four of the past six months.

Total Oregon tech employment reached 55,600, the highest tally since January 2009.

Oregon tech jobs bottomed out 12 months ago at 52,300. Since then, total tech employment has climbed more than 6 percent.

Here's the caveat I repeat every month: Oregon's numbers are preliminary, and

obviously don't capture every single job in the state. But the upward trend is unmistakable in the data, and reflected in recent news from the tech sector.

The flurry of deals -- from RadiSys' recent acquisition to Second Porch's sale -- reflect vibrancy in the tech community. And from Intel to ESI, nearly everyone in the Silicon Forest reported strong earnings last quarter.

By historical standards, Oregon tech employment is still at a low ebb. We've recovered fewer than half the jobs we shed in the last recession.

But the foundation is clearly there for growth.
